A Phu Quoc itinerary

Phu Quoc is now an administrative special zone under An Giang province, after the 2025 merger with the former Kien Giang.

• Day 1, before 6am

  Duong Dong fish market

  Go early, stay long enough that you stop feeling like you're in the way.

• Day 1, afternoon

  Nothing

  Leave it empty. It's too hot to do much else.

• Day 1, sunset

  Dinh Cau

  Then the night market after, but read the food section below first.

• Day 2, morning

  Bãi Sao

  About 25km from Duong Dong, allow 45 minutes to get there. Go early, it fills up by noon.

• Day 2, afternoon

  Hòn Thơm cable car

  From An Thới. Look down the entire way.

• Day 3, morning

  Hàm Ninh

  The fishing village. Look at the crabs before you eat one.

• Day 3, afternoon

  Grand World and VinWonders

  Both worth the money. All three big ticket attractions on this island were worth what I paid for them.

Things to do in Phu Quoc

• Fish market before 6am. Stay until you stop feeling in the way.
• Sunset at Dinh Cau.
• Hòn Thơm cable car. Look down the whole way.
• Bãi Sao early. It fills by noon.
• Bún quầy, mixing your own sauce at the table.
• Hàm Ninh. Look at the crabs before eating one.

For the ones with more time

• Skip the motorbike, use Grab instead.Everyone will tell you to rent one. You don't need to.
• Walk Duong Dong town with no plan for an hour.
• Eat one meal at a stall with no English menu and no prices.Point at whatever the next table has.
• Go to the night market and buy nothing. Eat somewhere else instead.

What to eat in Phu Quoc

The first dish I can speak to firsthand. The rest are island specialties worth trying, written as recommendations, not personal reviews. Night market seafood is overpriced. I eat at roadside places in Duong Dong instead.

• Bún quầyFish and squid paste in a clear broth, plus a sauce you mix yourself from the tray they hand you. Nobody explains it, you just figure it out.
• Ghẹ Hàm NinhSmall crabs from the fishing village on the east coast, steamed and eaten with salt, pepper, and lime. Firm, sweet meat for something that size.
• Gỏi cá tríchRaw herring, thinly sliced, tossed with shredded coconut, onion, and herbs, then rolled in rice paper and dipped in a peanut fish sauce.
• Nhum biểnSea urchin, split open and grilled over charcoal with scallion oil, crushed peanuts, salt, pepper, and lime on the side.
• Bánh canh chả cáThick tapioca-rice noodles in a mackerel broth with springy fish cake. Breakfast food.
• Còi biển maiThe adductor muscle from a pen shell, chewy and sweet, usually grilled with chili salt or stir-fried with mushrooms and greens.
